“Should I call the doc?” It’s a question our guest on Late Night Health, Sherry Torkos, B.Sc.Phm., R.Ph., holistic pharmacist and author of more than a dozen books on natural healing, says many parents, grandparents, and caretakers wrestle with when children get sick. Because of the nature of their positions, pharmacists field a lot of questions from parents who are worried about calling their pediatrician too frequently or concerned about making unnecessary doctor appointments where they could expose their children to even more viruses and bacteria in waiting rooms. On one hand, you hate to be the one jumping to conclusions after a few sneezes, but on the other hand, you also don’t want to be the one who didn’t make the right call if that fever, cough or dehydration turns into a much bigger problem.
During the fall months between school going back into session, cold and flu season and holiday travel ramping up, there are a smorgasbord of illnesses circulating that make it especially difficult to determine if your sick child should stay home and rest with remedies from the pharmacy, or if a trip to the doctor’s office is in order.
Sherry Torkos will share some basic guidelines to follow if your child becomes suddenly ill that can help you “make the right call” on heading to the doctor’s office or handling at home, including fever, rash, vomiting, and diarrhea, coughs, colds and respiratory problems. She says one common question asked by parents relates to diarrhea especially with the average healthy child who will suffer from diarrhea up to 15 times before he or she turns 5-years-old. Torkos, who has done consultant work for a Pantheryx, says there aren’t many diarrhea relief products that are safe for young children, but Pantheryx does offer a nutritional, solution-oriented option for parents called DiaResQ, which is safe for children as young as 1. Clinical trials have shown DiaResQ resolves most cases of diarrhea in children on the first day of use.
Mark Alyn, host of late Night Health, will discuss this and other useful health tips with pharmacist and mother, Sherry Torkos so you can make the right call this fall for the little ones in your life!
